Midland, MI - December 21, 2007
The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) today announced Governor Jennifer M. Granholm’s appointment of Rich Wells, vice president of energy, to the newly established Michigan Climate Action Council. The group, which consists of 35 representatives from the fields of academia, state and local government, environmental organizations and industry, was formed to develop recommendations to address issues related to climate change.
"Dow is committed to setting the standard for sustainability among industry," said Wells. "I look forward to working with members of the Council to develop recommendations that will help Michigan address the important challenge of climate change."
The council’s first responsibility will be providing the Governor with an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in the state of Michigan and developing a comprehensive plan to reduce those emissions.
"Providing humanity with a sustainable energy supply while addressing climate change is one of the most urgent environmental issues the world faces," said Wells. "We applaud the Governor for putting climate change at the top of her agenda. At Dow, we have committed significant financial investments in research and development to achieve innovative solutions that will contribute to slowing, stopping and reversing the growth of greenhouse gas emissions."
The council is expected to provide Governor Granholm with its first report on April 30, 2008, with a final report due by year's end.
